Loved the Back to the Future Trilogy – and one of the things that I’m sure every kid (or every kid in heart) would love is one of those Hover Boards from the second movie.

Well, believe it or not Mattel are planning on releasing a hover board this year based on the one from the movie:

Now, before you get too excited, it’s only a replica (but visually a perfect match).

It wont hover like the one in the movies.

Apparently, we need to wait until 2015 for that ……..

Matthew Broderick, better known as Ferris Bueller from the cult movie, is appearing in web ‘teases’ that will turn viral (I’m sure) in preparation for the commercial advertising Superbowl Sunday.

Word is that the commercial is going to be Ferris-Bueller-themed.

Here is what has been released :

It only goes for 10 seconds, but what do expect for a tease – a full length movie?

Correction to the orginal post:

The commercial is to advertise the 2012 Honda CRV on Superbowl Sunday. And here it is:

The Lynx was a colour handheld game console that was released in 1989 – in fact it was the first colour one of its kind.

For the techncially minded, the Lynx used a 65C02 CPU, which was part of the 6502 8-bit family. But it also used a 16-bit graphics chip to achieve all the scaling and sprite effects – a stand out amongst other competing products.

The Lynx could run by batteries or mains, and had the ability for headphones to be connected also. There were two slidewheels, one for screen contrast and and the other for volume.

A large number of games were released for the Lynx – 120 in fact, and they came in the form of slim ROM cards that made them fairly easy to store. They featured a lip on the top so you could remove them from the back of the unit easier once finished playing that game.

With a backlit display, the console featured a switchable right-handed/left-handed configuration, and the ability to network with up to 17 other units via its “ComLynx” system which in essence was a proprietry cable that Atari produced to phuscially link multiple units together. The best mutiplayer game was undeniably Slimeworld. Here’s a peek of the gameplay:

In the same year, Nintendo released the (monochromatic) Game Boy, and gradually they gained the market share of the console world (why I dont know – IMO the Lynx was better).

In 1990, Atari released version two of the Lynx. It was a bulkier unit, and what I noticed is that the volume could not go as loud as version 1. However, it had a clearer screen and a power save feature if you were running off batteries.

One word – Awesome! I’ve been wanting to see Pseudo Echo for so many years and for various reason have missed them, but luckily not this time. They played at the Upstairs Beresford, which I must say is a really good venue and was the right size for the crowd last night.

Coming on at around 10pm, they played out a mix of songs from Autumnal Park and Love An Adventure. The ones that the crowd enjoyed in particular I think were were Destination Unknown, Listening, Living In A Dream, Lies Are Nothing and Love An Adventure.

My favourite was the encore. They did a cover of Real Life’s hit Send Me An Angel which was brilliant! Also played Funkytown which (not surprisingly) brought the house down. This led onto some snippets of other songs like Just Can’t get Enough (Depeche Mode) and Girl U Want (Devo) which were totally done adlib and well appreciated by the crowd. The concert finished just after 11.30pm.

Below are some pics taken from my iPhone (damn, should of taken my real camera).

Can’t wait until they play again up here in Sydney again. Do yourself a favour and see them if you get the chance. Their music is awesome, but live is so much better.

The Cure played two concerts in Sydney this week as a part of the Sydney Vivid Live Festival – and fans were certainly not disappointed. The concert lasted just under an incredible four hours each night, with the band playing a whopping total of 44 songs.
This include their first three albums in their entirety (Three Imaginary Boys, Seventeen Seconds and Faith), and then 3 unforgettable encores consisting of 14 songs. The concerts were played at the Sydney Opera House, the first time The Cure had played in this smaller venue which only holds about 2500 people.

What was interesting was the reuniting of former keyboardists Lol Tolhurst and Roger O’Donnell, who I have not seen live for quite some time. That added a nice nostalgic touch to the performance.

What songs were played? Well, check out this playlist and tell me if you’re not impressed:

As far as videos go, I cannot wait for the DVD(s) to come out. Until they do, search on youtube for people that took videos on their mobile phones during the night, such as….

Personally, I think the concerts were by far the best Cure concerts I have been to, and am eternally grateful for the band coming down under to play. There are a lot of dedicated fans here in Australia.

Did you see it? And what did you think?

Back in the day when the premiere wrestling promotion was the WWF, there were a number of classic wrestlers that I think started the themed/storyboarding of today’s stars.

I decided to compile a list of my favourite wrestlers from the WWF days, and here they are (in no particular order):

Andre the Giant

This guy was huge, and was aptly named the 8th wonder of the world. I saw him live back in the 80s, and was lucky enough to stand next to him to get a real idea of just how big he was (I think 7’4″ from memory).
Unfortunately, his gigantism caused him great pain throughout his body, and sadly passed away in 1993 in his sleep.

Rowdy Roddy Piper

Piper was the guy who always dressed in a kilt, yet didn’t have a scottish accent (although he did have a Scottish background). He wasn’t a big guy, but was full of spontaneity and quick wit. even though he was on of the ‘bad guys’, you kinda liked him for his personality.

The Junkyard Dog

More commonly known as JYD, he was most known for his head butt and upper-body strength, the latter of which saw him regularly body slam such large wrestlers. The word “thump,” which referred to JYD’s power slam, was prominently displayed on his wrestling trunks. I particularly liked the head but because he would get on all-fours (like a dog) and charge at his opponent.

Bret “The Hitman” Hart

The hitman had a cool persona – the wet hair look, sunglasses, a cool walk, and the infamous pink tights. His signature move was the ‘sharpshooter, but was more famous when he teamed with his brother-in-law, Jim “The Anvil” Neidhart, in the classic Hart Foundation team. And who can forget their manager, Jimmy Hart.

Ricky “The Dragon” Steamboat

Ricky was one of the most liked good guys of the WWF, and kept his babyface/young look throughout his career. His father was Hawaiian, and mother Japanese American, hence his Asian features which were crucial for his “Dragon” gimmick.

The Iron Sheik

Standing 6’0″ and dressed as a sheik with pointed shoes and a handlebar mustache, the man who once served in his homeland’s army arrived during the Iran Contra affair, played an American-hating Iranian to derisive crowds.
While his usual partner Nikolai Volkoff, would sing the Russian national anthem, the Iron Sheik would say in a heavily accented voice, “Iran, number one. Russia, number one. USA…” He would then spit on the ground. It was only an act, but crowds loved to hate him.

Randy “Macho Man” Savage

Another ‘cool’ wrestler, Savage was recognizable by wrestling fans for his distinctively deep and raspy voice and his ring attire (often comprising sunglasses, a bandana or head band, flashy robes, and a cowboy hat).
For much of his tenures in the WWF, he was managed by his real life wife, “Miss Elizabeth” Hulette (who can forget her!).

Hulk Hogan

Say no more. He was widely regarded as the most successful, famous, and biggest draw in the history of professional wrestling. And he was very marketable (remember Hulkamania?). The list of achievements and titles is a huge one, and crowds would go absolutely wild when he appeared. For a full list of achievements, check out his entry in Wikipedia.

Woohoo – announced today. The Cure are coming back to Australia for vivid live festival in Sydney. Playing on the 31st May and 1st June, it’s sure to be be pretty special, especially considering ‘what’ they will be playing.

They will be playing three albums in their entirerty – namely Three Imaginary Boys (1979), Seventeen Seconds (1980), and Faith (1981). Any die hard Cure fans will absolutely love the playlist. There’s nothing better than songs like 10:15 Saturday Night, A Forest or Play for Today being played live.

Look at the line up of who will be appearing – Awesome to see Lol Tolhurst back for this tour:

Three Imaginary Boys (1979)
The Cure Trio: Robert Smith (voice & guitar), Simon Gallup (bass), Jason Cooper (drums)

Seventeen Seconds (1980)
The Cure Quartet: Robert Smith (voice & guitar), Simon Gallup (bass), Jason Cooper (drums), Roger O’Donnell (keys)

Faith (1981)
The Cure Quintet: Robert Smith (voice & guitar), Simon Gallup (bass), Jason Cooper (drums), Roger O’Donnell (keys & percussion), Laurence Tolhurst (keys & percussion)

The Cure are playing at the Opera House which is unusual and new to the band, but I noticed that the performance will be recorded for distribution and broadcast so expect to see DVDs released in the future. Pity their other Oz tours from years back haven’t been recorded because they have done some good ones – hang on, all of them have been good! And it is being advertised as a 180 minute concert.

Can’t wait for this, and look for another post here after the concerts to report how good it was as I’m definitely going!

The latest 80′s band/singer to possibly announce a comeback is Adam Ant. Adam (born Stuart Leslie Goddard), will be doing a solo tour this and next month, which is his first in 15 years. He is being backed backed by his new band, The Good, The Mad and The Lovely Posse.

He hinted on the reform of the original group, telling News of the World: “Some of the Prince Charming lineup will be back – if they can make it through boot camp. I’m a hard task-master.”

Obviously no dates and locations have been set as yet, but watch this space.

Boy George has confirmed that Culture Club will reunite in 2012, and will do so with a world wide tour. This is great news for fans of this ‘new wave’ (?) group of the 80s.

Why next year? A couple of reasons – George is touring solo this year on his ‘Here and Now’ tour to promote his new album, and next year marks their 30 year anniversary as well as 10 years since their last reformation.

In 1981, Boy George occasionally sang with the group Bow Wow Wow under the stage name “Lieutenant Lush”. But after this formed his own band with ‘Kissing to be Clever’ their first album release.

Culture Club are probably best known for singles from their second album in 1983 (Colour by Numbers), namely ‘Church of the Poison Mind’ and ‘Karma Chameleon’.
