Coming on at around 10pm, they played out a mix of songs from Autumnal Park and Love An Adventure. The ones that the crowd enjoyed in particular I think were were Destination Unknown, Listening, Living In A Dream, Lies Are Nothing and Love An Adventure.

My favourite was the encore. They did a cover of Real Life’s hit Send Me An Angel which was brilliant! Also played Funkytown which (not surprisingly) brought the house down. This led onto some snippets of other songs like Just Can’t get Enough (Depeche Mode) and Girl U Want (Devo) which were totally done adlib and well appreciated by the crowd. The concert finished just after 11.30pm.

Can’t wait until they play again up here in Sydney again. Do yourself a favour and see them if you get the chance. Their music is awesome, but live is so much better.

What was interesting was the reuniting of former keyboardists Lol Tolhurst and Roger O’Donnell, who I have not seen live for quite some time. That added a nice nostalgic touch to the performance.

Personally, I think the concerts were by far the best Cure concerts I have been to, and am eternally grateful for the band coming down under to play. There are a lot of dedicated fans here in Australia.

The Cure are playing at the Opera House which is unusual and new to the band, but I noticed that the performance will be recorded for distribution and broadcast so expect to see DVDs released in the future. Pity their other Oz tours from years back haven’t been recorded because they have done some good ones – hang on, all of them have been good! And it is being advertised as a 180 minute concert.

Can’t wait for this, and look for another post here after the concerts to report how good it was as I’m definitely going!

Why next year? A couple of reasons – George is touring solo this year on his ‘Here and Now’ tour to promote his new album, and next year marks their 30 year anniversary as well as 10 years since their last reformation.

In 1981, Boy George occasionally sang with the group Bow Wow Wow under the stage name “Lieutenant Lush”. But after this formed his own band with ‘Kissing to be Clever’ their first album release.

Culture Club are probably best known for singles from their second album in 1983 (Colour by Numbers), namely ‘Church of the Poison Mind’ and ‘Karma Chameleon’.

Even though the band itself did not stop in 1988, the original line up certainly did. But for the tour, Jones returns with co-songwriter and sample master Don Letts, drummer Greg Roberts, bassist Leo Williams, and keyboardist Dan Donovan.

Big Audio Dynamite lasted for five years and released four albums. Their biggest hit was the number one ‘Rush’ in 1991. While there is no talk of a new album yet, it is still early days and one can only hope.

Wild Horses – Gino Vanelli
This catchy tune was released in 1987, and reached #55 in the US top 100 but #7 in Canada (where Gino was born). The song earnt Vanelli the Juno Award for Recording Engineer of the Year (which he incidentally shared with his brother that year).

The clip is in black and white and features a sexy female playing the harmonica. And no, I have no idea what her name is – in fact I don’t know the names of the other band members either (can someone help me?).

I know I said the tune is catchy, but when you look at the lyrics ……. well I’ll let you make up your own mind. Weird.

Wild Horses – Nik Kershaw
Not one of Nik’s more popular songs (he had far better), but this one was released in 1984 on ‘The Riddle’. The Riddle reached UK #8, U.S #113, AUS #39.

Laid Back – White Horse
I love this song. Laidback were a Danish band, and released this song in 1983. White Horse was a dance track with a repetitive, memorable bassline and ambiguous, drug and/or sex-themed lyrics (“white horse” being slang for heroin) that became popular in US clubs. It spent three weeks at number one on Billboard’s National Disco Action charts. White Horse ’89 was released in (have a guess) 1989 by Laidback’s label but it did not have the success of the original.
